Welcome to Retail Checks and Balances , a podcast that takes you behind the scenes of the bustling world of commerce and culinary delights to help you grow your business and win . Join us as we explore the fascinating stories , trends and challenges that shape the retail and hospitality industry , from cozy corner cafes to sprawling shopping malls and everything in between . And now here's your host , kevin Spencer .
Speaker 2Welcome to Retail Checks and Balances . My guest today is Eddie Roselle , who's a Nutritional , health and Fatalized Coach .
Speaker 3Welcome to the show Eddie hey , kevin , thank you for having me . I'm excited to be here . Are you feeling today ?
Speaker 2I'm feeling great and that's because of you . I mean , your program is amazing and I'm learning so much . The awareness is there in terms of things that they didn't even know that we needed to think about when it comes to health . But I'm guessing you can push the envelope forward in terms of that , more or less right .
Speaker 3Yeah , I think one of the things I wanted to talk to you about today is something that we're starting to work together on and that we'll work in more detail together on , which is some of the challenges that you face .
Speaker 3So you travel quite a bit , whether it's internationally , or I know this week , earlier , you were up in the Midwest and Chicago , and so I think , since we've been working together , you've been traveling at least half the time , if not more . So this is a real challenge for a lot of people is how do you focus on your health , how do you keep up with your nutrition and make good decisions while you're stressed , while you're running through an airport , while you're limited in terms of your options that you have in terms of healthy food ? Sometimes you don't have a lot of fresh options when you're traveling . So what are some of the challenges that you've seen and what are some of the adjustments that you've tried to make ? And then we can talk a little bit about that , because I think that's just real life for you , right , and a lot of other executives in the world .
Speaker 2Yeah , it's a big time challenge for a lot of executives and a lot of business owners per se , because , at the end of the day , we cannot avoid traveling for work , as you said , in the airport . It's mostly fast foods . One of the things I can say I did this week was I went to the club and the club had a nice selection of healthy breakfast or even a healthy lunch . So focusing on those foods has been good and , as you specifically said , getting a couple protein bars just throwing my luggage just to keep me on track in terms of managing the calorie content . But , most importantly , I know we've been talking about getting my protein count up and I think that's one of the things that keeps the energy levels there , you know .
Speaker 3Yeah , yeah . So you mentioned a couple of things there that I think are so important , and it comes from this overall theme of being prepared , right ? So when you're going and you're traveling to meet a potential client , you want to make sure that you're prepared . Whether that means looking at some of the documentation that you're going to share , whether it's a PowerPoint slide or presentation , whatever it is , you're making sure that you've got the preparation that you need in order to succeed , right ? And so some of the stuff that we've talked about is what you just mentioned , which is , when you know that you're going to be running through an airport , when you know that you're not going to have access to the fresh options that you have at home , when your wife's cooking and so forth , one of the best strategies is how do we then prepare ourselves for success ?
Speaker 3And one of the best ways to do that is , first of all , focusing on protein . Is protein , we know , keeps us a little fuller , and the other thing is , well , there's a lot of ways that we can take protein with us , right ? There are a lot of options in the airports . When you go into , let's say , one of those Hudson News or one of those convenience stores in the airport you can pick up protein shakes . There's a lot of different options now in terms of protein shakes and you can get . I remember going when I used to travel a lot extensively as a sales executive myself . You would never be able to find hard boiled eggs .
Speaker 3Now you can find hard boiled eggs in the cold section , you can find these poor power protein shakes or these fair life protein shakes .
Speaker 3You're getting 25 , 30 grams of protein in one thing , and that's something that you can just grab it . If you're late to your gate , you can grab it , you can run with it , you can have it on the flight , right , and all of a sudden , that is doing a cup of cool things . Number one , first of all , you're getting your protein in right . Second of all , it's quick and efficient , so you don't have to prepare or cook anything . And then , third of all , it's going to keep you full while you're on your flight . And then , when you get to your destination , you're not ravenously hungry , right ? So if you don't eat anything and you get on that flight and then you have a two or three hour flight to New York or Chicago from Miami , right , you're going to get to your destination , you're going to be hungry , and then what happens is you're going to eat whatever you first see , right , you're going to get off and you're going to see some fast food , or you're going to see something .
Speaker 3you're going to go to Chicago and eat an Italian beef sandwich or whatever it is , and that's the reality of it , and part of it is really not your fault , because you're hungry right . When we're really hungry , it's like one of the groceries store while you're hungry . You know , try to go to the grocery store when you're on a full stomach and you've already eaten , so that you don't make bad decisions , because when you go to the grocery store and you're hungry , everything looks good .
Speaker 2Everything looks good , you're right .
Speaker 3The snacks and everything . So I think you know having different strategies in place to help us prepare is fantastic , and I think you know what we've talked about is having some protein bars in the book bag . I know I do that everywhere I go . If I have a three day trip , for example , I have minimum one protein bar per day . Sometimes I'll throw in a couple of extra ones there if my wife wants to have one or whatever , but just being prepared for that stuff , you know it helps . It helps If you have extra time and you're at the airport and you have a long layover or something . There are times you can sit down at an actual restaurant and you can order a healthier meal . So there's ways to get around it . But the key really is just preparation right , making sure that you know the situation you're going to be in . You just have to make sure that you're well prepared for it .
Speaker 2Okay , let's circle back a bit . Tell me your story and how do you get to this , so at least you know you talk about your experience in a big way . So let's circle back to how this all started for you .
Speaker 3Yeah , so I . So I'm 41 as of last month , and when I was 19 , I waited . My heaviest weight was about 200 , anywhere between 295 to 297 pounds , right , or just under 300 pounds and .
Speaker 3I was . I was always a big kid growing up . You know I played football in high school . I gained most of my weight during and after high school and then right after that I lost it all . So I lost . I ended up losing a little bit over 125 pounds . I did it fast because I was absolutely .
Speaker 3When I'm a disciplined person and when I know what I have to do , I Kind of I can go and do it . I'm very self-motivated . Not everyone's like that , right . Sometimes people need more accountability or they just need the knowledge . Right like you , for example , are Busy with your family and with your career and you may not have the interest or the time to go and look up what's healthy and what's not healthy . Right , versus myself , I was younger , I was 19 . I had the time I was in college . I majored in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry , so I understand and love the science behind it , and so when I lost all of my weight , it was partially me excited to Become this person that I knew was inside of me . But other people , when they looked at me , they saw overweight Eddie , right , they saw this person that's overweight and fat and I inside . I knew that there was someone else inside of me . I just needed to get that , get to that person physically so that everyone , everyone else , can see me the way that I saw myself , right ? And so when I did that Along that process , I also just loved learning .
Speaker 3I loved learning about what food does to our bodies and inside of our bodies , and you know why is it that ? You know , one of the key things that I tell clients is when you look at a food , you have to look at it from a few different dimensions . You have to look at how much energy isn't that food ? So the calorie count that food , right ? How does it impact your energy levels ? But then also , how is that food gonna make you feel , right ? Is it gonna be satisfying or is it not gonna be satisfying , right ?
Speaker 3So the other thing is a third thing is what is it gonna impact the long term ? So I have a bag of potato chips . Well , guess what , 30 minutes after having a bag of potato chips , I'm probably still hungry and I can go and eat something else , right ? Versus if I have Healthy grilled chicken breasts with some broccoli and a sweet potato , I'm not gonna be very hungry for hours , right ? So that meal is impacting and affecting the way that I feel .
Speaker 3Calories and what decisions I'm gonna make later on . Right , that's impacting a few different things . It's not just how many calories is a meal and the food and that's it . It's how does that impact my overall decision making right then and there ? How does it make me feel ? Am I satisfied ? And then , how is it gonna make me feel three or four hours later for my next week ? Right , and those are things that we need to consider , because food , at the end of the day , is is almost like food , is medicine , right and right , and it's almost like the body's language , right , you feed it right and and your body will feel right . You know , a Lot of Americans are at this place where they eat an unhealthy diet or standard American diet . It's very high in sugar , very high in processed , ultra processed foods and they don't know . They're at kind of like this baseline where they don't know what it feels like to be up here at normal and to feel good because they're so used to being down here for so long .
Speaker 2You know you hit , you hit something the nail on the head there because you know , as an executive , we travel and where you know the discipline has to be there . Because I was in a room with a bunch of people and they throw candy on the table and it was impossible and I shouldn't say impossible , but it was very challenging to resist . I mean I took one star post . I mean I know that one killed me , but I saw people . I was looking around , people were eating all of the chocolate and everything and it was because lunch was late . So they said lunch is late , but we can give you this to eat in the meantime .
Speaker 2And in my head there's something that's bad and I need to be disciplined and I need to not do that as well . We get so busy when we travel and we're trying to crunch everything in the day that you don't get , you miss a meal or you grab anything that's there . So how do you advise an executive ? How do they manage that in terms of eating correctly and making sure in the hotel room in the hotel , that they stay ? If they can't make the gym , what can they do to keep on top of their nutrition and their health ?
Speaker 3So I wanna answer your question , but I also wanna go back to something that you mentioned which is incredibly important , is what do you do when you're in a boardroom meeting ? Right , and I've been there . So I used to have Russell Stover as a client and I remember being in Kansas City in their offices and it was around the holidays , it was around Halloween , and they had a bunch of Halloween candies because it's Russell Stover chocolates and I remember they tossed a whole one of those pumpkin things full of candy in the boardroom table and they're like here , guys have some candy . Not only is it them offering you food , but it's them offering you their product .
Speaker 3So , you kind of have to have some chocolate right so that . But that's the beauty of something that you and I talk about a lot , which is that the goal is never perfection , it's always just making progress and just having awareness right . And so I want you and I want any other person that I work with to be able to have the flexibility in their diet to have a piece of chocolate in that situation , or to have a piece of cake if it's a birthday party , because it's not foods that are inherently good or bad At the end of the day . It's the situation that you're in . And if you're with a client and that client is offering you something , maybe you should have a little one . That's okay . And you have to have enough flexibility in your diet to make that okay , first of all , and second of all , to not have you have the guilty feeling . Because what happens when you have the guilty feeling is that then , all of a sudden , you think that you failed when you haven't failed . You're just being normal human right . There's no reason why you should feel like you failed if you had a piece of chocolate or a little snack , or it's someone's birthday Sally's birthday in the office , and they brought in a cake and you're there visiting as a person that's trying to sell them your product and you're not gonna have a piece of Sally's birthday cake . Come on like you gotta have a piece of Sally's birthday cake . So those are things that you have to . Again , you have to look at the overall picture and you have to make decisions based on everything in context , as opposed to just I have a calorie count and I have this and this is the diet and I can't eat X , y and Z . That's not . You need to have flexibility there .
Speaker 3Right , to answer your question about you know , when you're in a hotel room and stuff like that , you know one thing that I provide my clients is I provide them with a really quick 15 minute workout . It's a body weight workout that they can do in a hotel room . You literally grab a chair , you can do some body squats , you can do some push-ups . If you can't do regular push-ups , get on your knees and do some knee push-ups . There's a lot of different things that you can do in order to just get movement and , again , the workout doesn't have to be perfect .
Speaker 3Getting movement in is what matters , right , right . So getting movement in when you're sitting in an , in an airplane for two or three hours . It's good to get some movement in before , it's good to get some movement in after . It doesn't matter where you are , so you don't have to go and do a barbell back squat , you can just do some body air squats and feel good and you'll feel your heart rate get elevated and you'll feel your breathing because you're moving the body right and that's . I think it's incredibly important not only to have flexibility around your nutrition , but also have flexibility around your movement patterns and your workouts right . Yeah , on a regular basis , if you can get a workout in in a gym once or twice a week , that's fantastic and that's the standard . But you're gonna move away from the standard and you're gonna need flexibility and you're gonna need to to kind of be , you're gonna have to improvise , right , and if your plan doesn't have space , nutritionally and fitness wise , in order to improvise , then you're setting yourself off the failure , right .
Speaker 2Right . So I believe , as you said , and a discipline is is key . I mean , it's it's your life , it's your health and you know , um , one of the things I like about your program itself is that you know you can do things at your own pace and you can . You know you can elevate when you , when you need to . You know it's your body and you would be able to manage your own body .
Speaker 2You know , not being too much of a pussy or yes , you say right , but but being it so being able to push yourself to the , to the limit that you know , okay , I'm getting something done . So , um , I think that's important as an executive , traveling and making sure that we get they correct foods in , get get Just as we go into business , meet and we want to accomplish something , then we need to keep that discipline when it comes to health . So I think that's a amazing feeling you get in , even getting better energy levels up . You know , and you know we can pick and choose when we want to cheat on some on food , but , as you said , it's not every day , but sometimes you need to do that . So that's yeah , I mean .
Speaker 3Think about , think about you when you're implementing your solutions at a client right , and think about Do you want to throw everything at them at the same time , or do you want to kind of hold their hand in the beginning and let them Kind of adopt the , the , the power of the solution , little by little as they feel more and more comfortable ? Like there's , there's certain steps and protocols in place that you have In order to implement your solutions at a client .
Speaker 3I'm sure right just like me in my past life working in software . When we implement software , there's a lot of different components to that . Right , there's there's implementing the actual software , there's integrating into the other software ecosystem that that you're dealing with , but then there's also the people that are actually using the software and them getting used to adopting Whatever that's changing in their daily lives , right , and so what I try to implement with my clients from an nutrition and a fitness perspective is the same . Essentially , it's really just taking small steps , small steps , getting consistent and mastering those small steps , right . So , very , very basic things that are strategic because they're small things , but that they're small things that have a big impact , right , so we can start to get some big wins , right , and then , once we could , we become consistent with those and and you start to get comfortable with those first few things , then we start to add a couple of more tweaks and we start to add on top of that and we start to layer and then we get some more wins .
Speaker 3And then , little by little , two things are happening First of all , you're getting closer to your goals and second of all , most importantly , you're learning how to do it yourself . You're you're , you're taking the ownership of the process and then you're able to do that yourself , so that then no one can take that away from right . At the end of the day , you're going to know how it is that you plan for your next business trip , you're going to know how it is that you plan when you have a night out with your wife and you're going to maybe look at that menu ahead of time to see what it is that the options are and which ones are good and bad and which ones you maybe want to work right . So it's setting people up for success , but it's step by step , little by little , mastering the basics and then adding on and layering the top of that , and I think that that's how you end up Empowering someone to make their own decisions and to feel good about their progress .
Speaker 2So that's fantastic , and I know I have a bunch of customers who are executives and I mean this would be vital information for them . You know , um , and I think working with somebody like you would be very , very Beneficial to most of them , because some of them are , some of them are in pretty good shape , some of them are not you know and um and I think that awareness of what you eat and how you manage your body is something really important .
Speaker 2I know we're out of time , but I think this was great . I mean , I think we should do something like this again in a different topic , but where would have somebody , a potential client , for you go ? What's your website ? What's your social media ? So we can put that here .
Speaker 3Yeah , so this was great , Kevin . I really appreciate you giving me the platform to kind of talk about not only the work that we do together , but kind of my thought process and how I work with clients . People can find me . If they want to get the most value out of my content , they can find me on Instagram .
Speaker 3My Instagram handle is Eddie Rosell Fit , that's Eddy Eddie Rosell Fit , and then my website , eddyrosellcom . It's as simple as that . I've got some resources on there and I even have a link to a free fat loss training video that people can get access to . It's completely free . I kind of go through some of the myths about fat loss and what people think , maybe holding them back , but really isn't just to kind of help people get out of their own way . At the end of the day , I help create opportunity and help people get out of their own way and get them thinking in a different way to enable them to find success , and so I've got that link on my Instagram as well as on my website , and if anyone has questions , feel free to reach out to yourself or directly to me on Instagram . This is fantastic .
Speaker 2I'm sure you're going to get some calls , for sure , because people have known me and even I have a story as well in terms of my transition when I was 325 pounds and I'm down to 244 to 45 . And it was a journey . But I think you adding this extra step in my health goal is amazing and I will tell anybody that this is an amazing feeling . Just losing one inch around your waist , I mean it feels so fantastic . I mean some people might say just an inch , but it feels like 50 feet to me because of what it brings that positive energy and it brings that feeling of , yeah , I made a goal . So I think that's important . But thank you very much , eddie . I know we see each other all the time , so I know I'm in great company when it comes to my health and nutrition .
Speaker 3Likewise . Thanks , kevin . All the best to you , and the best thing about what you're going through is that it impacts everything else in your life in such a positive way , whether it's relationships with your wife , with your potential clients and customers and it impacts everything in a positive way . So I'm glad I can contribute to that .
Speaker 2For sure . Thank you so much .
Speaker 3All right , bye-bye .
